Fun Photo Friday - Simplicity

I am keeping things simple today.

White orchid simple.

I have a soft spot for orchids... doesn't everybody? They add a touch of sophistication to any living space. They make great gifts. Orchids are classic and delicate.

I love them.

Here is a photo of some white orchids against a night sky.

Enjoy your weekend!

Smile, make rum punch, read and give in to your chocolate cravings.... I will! xx

RECIPE: Classic Rum Punch

Last weekend I relaxed and made some rum punch.
I swear by this rum punch recipe (and my mum swears by it too) because it is simple, easy and foolproof!
The best part of the recipe is that the recipe itself rhymes which makes it easy to remember.

RUM PUNCH RECIPE:

1 part SOUR
2 parts SWEET
3 parts STRONG
4 parts WEAK

Directions:
First you will need a jug and to do some math
Now for the math: if you add all the "parts" up you will get 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 parts in total

In my case: I used an old 1.75 L rum bottle as my jug
I went to a converter online and found out that 1.75 L equals just under 8 cups
8 cups divided by 10 is 0.8 cups (so not quite a cup — is how I will measure each part)

So now for the recipe...
1 part SOUR  I use lime juice (freshly squeezed when I have enough limes and time but mostly just store bought) but you could use lemon juice.

2 parts SWEET  I used Muscovado Barbadian sugar
I made it into a simple syrup by adding it to two parts water (WEAK) putting it all in a saucepan over a medium heat. Stir occasionally until dissolved.

3 parts STRONG — I used Old Brigand rum but any rum should work well here (I don't like the idea of white rum though). Add the rum (most crucial element) to your jug.

Once the syrup is finished and cooled, add it to your jug.
Add the remaining 2 parts of WEAK (I use water but some people use fruit juice (I find juice can make it too sweet) or sparkling water).

Then give the jug a stir or in my case (since mine was made in a bottle with a cap) — I gave it a good ole shake.

Pour it into a glass filled with lots of ice and top it with fresh grated nutmeg (very necessary).
A splash of Angostura bitters would also be an amazing touch (alas I did not have any on Sunday).

Now sit back and enjoy :)

Happy Wednesday!

Last Week's Likes

Evening Class — Adobe Illustrator
Last week I started an Adobe Illustrator evening class at the University of the West Indies in Barbados. I saw an advert in our local newspaper and without too much pondering — I signed up!
My first class was on Thursday and boy did I have the first-day-of-school jitters... but I was super excited. After finally finding a place to park I gathered up my notepad, new pen and a map of the campus, and strutted around looking for my classroom.
I settled into class, found an empty seat next to two very nice people and class begun.
So far so great!
I didn't take my camera — I didn't want to appear to be too keen... hence no photo :(

Dinner at Cin Cin
Next month is my mum's fabulous fiftieth birthday but because of school my brother will miss it.
So as an early celebration, the four of us went to Cin Cin by the Sea restaurant.
It was incredible — the atmosphere, the food, the service, the company, the Prosecco — yum yum yum!

Flying Fish for dinner
Flying fish is a popular Barbadian dish but recently it has been very scarce/very pricey at the local Fish Markets.
On Friday night, we crumpled under the pressure, bought some of our national fish and indulged.
My dad was the chef that evening and made perfectly seasoned, breaded, pan-fried, juicy flying fish fillets. It was a lovely meal.

Taking the dogs to the East Coast
We planned to go on a boat yesterday — but unfortunately that didn't work out.
So instead we packed up the car with a well stocked cooler (complete with home-made rum punch) and our two dogs and headed to the East Coast of the island.
We took the dogs for a walk, a couple swims (this traumatized them both) and then we sat back and enjoyed the scenery while they napped.
Great way to spend a Sunday!

Fun Photo Friday - To Relaxation and Rum Punch

I am craving for a weekend of relaxation.
8 hour plus sleeps.
Savoury family breakfasts.
Big family dinners.
Long sea baths (preferably with a rum punch in hand).
Curling up with a hot chocolate and my book (who would have thunk it).

Let's hope it is as relaxing as this photo.

Photo was taken on Saturday (the day of the wedding)

Ps. I love the clouds... they are perfect!

Cover Photo Ideas for your Facebook Page

For those with a Facebook account — this post will be of interest to you.

Anyone who has a Facebook account knows by now that the Facebook gods have been making some changes... a brand-spanking-new profile page called a TIMELINE! Most of the Facebook population is weary.

By mistake I prematurely converted to the new Facebook Timeline back in January — my curiousity got the best of me. And to my detriment... I couldn't revert back to my original and most beloved profile page.

I had to find joy in my new Timeline. Then I discovered joy in the large and in charge COVER PHOTO. Instead of just one measly profile picture... I had a whole whopping cover photo.

Here is what my "Cover Photo & Profile Pic" combo looks like:

Mine is quite simple — visually appealing and pastelly pink (not my favourite colour but I do love that photo).

My curiousity continued and I checked out the profiles of friends who were also Timeline victims. I saw some cool stuff but I wanted to see more... so I hopped on over to Google to see what else I could find.

Here is a selection of the coolest, most innovated, extremely creative "Cover Photo & Profile Pic" combos that I found and some ideas for putting together a creative combo for yourself.

Cover Photo Idea #1:  Multiple photos of yourself

Cover Photo Idea #2: Add quirky graphics/illustrations

Cover Photo Idea #3: Become part of a larger picture

Cover Photo Idea #4: Market yourself

Cover Photo Idea #5: Or eventually you will be able to sell the space

These are just a few ideas of what can be done. The possibilities are endless.

I heard through the grapevine that everyone will have Timelines by the end of March. My message to the non-converts: SAVOUR the simplicity of your profile page but get EXCITED about the new and improved TIMELINE.

Last Week's Likes

Starting the second book in the trilogy: "Catching Fire"
As I mentioned a couple Last Week's Likes ago, I started reading The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I finished the first book, The Hunger Games and it was great... thrilling, nail-biting and overall an easy read... I completed it in 9 days flat. Now 9 days is fast for me because unlike the avid reader, I  pretty much only read before bed and I can happily put a book down. My book club buddy on the other hand finished the book in one day.
So far we are both enjoying Catching Fire - for me it has been a seamless transition from the first book.

St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is usually celebrated by painting a clover somewhere on your body, drinking green beer and listening to Irish music. At least that is how I celebrated it for the last six years. 2012 was different. My uncle's wedding fell on the 17th and I couldn't show up expecting to indulge in a pint of Guinness.
However, in honour of the drinking holiday, I ordered a Heineken (because the bottle is green) with my lunch. I had lunch at Cassareep Cafe in Speightstown. It was lovely!

Chandeliers in trees
The wedding on Saturday was elegant and classic. The villa was decorated with white linens, white orchids, pink Champagne and crystal chandeliers hanging from large, regal trees. As you can tell I especially loved the chandeliers that lit up the garden.
When I grow up - I wouldn't mind some chandeliers in my trees (that is of course if I own trees).

This little man's outfit
My cousin's 19 month old son was adorably dressed for the wedding on Saturday. He trotted around the garden in his Vans the entire evening getting loads of attention.

A PONG Party
Now I am not sure where this term comes from but I learnt it from my parents.
A PONG Party: is a party after a party. It is a get together after an event to talk about that event. Questions such as: Who danced with who? Who drank too much? Who had the best outfit? Are asked and answered.
It derives from the popular game: PING PONG.
At the event you PING and the next day you PONG, hence the term PONG Party!
So yesterday the families of both the bride and groom regrouped at the villa for amazing food, long sea bathes and lots of chat.

Fun Photo Friday - How it all began

Happy Friday All!

Today I am going to share a photo from 2010. In the summer of 2010, I was introduced to the lovely world of the SLR camera. I bought my first SLR (with the help of my parents) and signed up for a photography course.

The course was called Light Lab 1 Foundation Photography and was taught by the ever talented Joel Brooks. The picture below is our class photo (me in the centre being my usual enthusiastic self).

I highly recommend that if you own or plan to own a SLR camera, you sign up for a course... even if it is a one day course. Unless you are one of those super disciplined people who can teach themselves... but even then I recommend a course because you will meet people that are also into photography.

Joel Brooks has gone fancy now and has videos on YouTube of pass pupils. Here is a video of a cake designer that signed up for the photography course to help her with her business:

Happy Weekend :)

Light "Painting" Photography

So last week my little cousins and I tried Light "Painting" Photography.

The main reason I brought out the camera that night was to merely entertain the young fellows... but not only did we have fun, we ended up with some interesting photographs using light.

To paint with light (using photography) you need the following:
  • A camera that has a manual setting (M) because you will need to be able to control how long the shutter stays open.
  • A tripod so that the camera doesn't shake/wobble causing the streaks of light to be blurry (this also allows you to do the painting which is a lot of fun)
  • A light source — we used a number of different lights. Flash lights, LED lights, even a rear light off a bicycle but you could really use anything really.
  • A remote control or self timer on your camera. This way you can definitely do the painting yourself.
I had a bonus - I had little helpers and an audience that was easy to impress.

Here is a little sample of what we created:

This was done by my 3-yr old cousin with the LED light in his right hand and the bicycle light in the left. The streak close to the lens is because he thought the photo was done before it actually was.

This is my 9-yr old cousin and to achieve this effect I had him hold the flash light under his chin for a couple seconds and then move it all around. Spooky! He looks like a sorcerer.

Now simply moving a light around without any direction/pattern/purpose can get a little boring — so we decided to try writing our names. I was the first to step up to the plate.

Below is my first attempt at painting "Diana" using light. I decided to do it in script.

It is backwards because I was facing the camera and writing my name from left to right. I didn't worry with the small detail of backward text — explaining to the audience that in post production (ie. Photoshop) I could flip the image so it reads correctly. We continued on smartly and let everyone have a go.

"Diana" in script
Script was hard. It was loopy and hard to read.

Mum had the brilliant idea of writing in capitals, writing backwards (so it translates correctly on the camera and you do not have to flip it in post production) and treating it like an Etch-A-Sketch. So she stepped up and wrote EWAN.

ET VOILA!! Fantastic!!

I couldn't let my mum literally out shine me... so I had a go and here is my result:

In Photoshop - I got rid of the background. Not sure if I prefer it to the image with EWAN on it.

It is harder than I thought but I got it done :)

Here is a Do It Yourself video that helps explains it thoroughly:

Light Photography with my Canadian cousins
As I mentioned in a previous post, I have family visiting from Canada - my uncle and his family.

So one evening, I wanted to do something cool with my three young boy cousins (3, 7, and a 9 year old) instead of watching them watch television. We started by exploring the garden — I showed them the lime tree, bay leaf tree, the coconut tree, the almond tree, and all the other quirky things in our yard.

That got old pretty quick.

Then I had the brilliant idea to show them light photography. We all got flashlights and other light devices, set up the tripod and cleared the patio so we could move around.

The photo below is of the three boys moving around.

From left to right:
7-year old with an LED flashlight
9-year old with a regular tungsten light flashlight
3-year old with a rear bicycle light

Having a pleasant photo-op surprise
After our light photography session, I ventured into the garden to take some photos of the full moon rising. As soon as I was all settled and all the manual settings on my camera set for the moon — a cloud came and hid the moon. It was a big cloud... shucks!

So I decided to wait.

All of a sudden I see the boys march out of the living room and head straight to our bamboo patch with flash lights in hand.

It was nice to see them exploring and hear them chatting to one another. I took the photo below along with some others and completely forgot about the moon.

Bubbly on the beach on a Thursday
Last Thursday my brother came home for March break from boarding school. My mum made a little fuss and decided to have Prosecco at sunset.

And that is exactly what we did. It was lovely!

Merton's Fish Fry at Moon Town, St. Lucy, Barbados
Last Thursday we ventured up to the north of Barbados for some local fish fry.

Moon Town is the simplest of towns. It is a fishing town with a fishing market, a restaurant (fish fry), a supermarket, hardware store, karaoke bar, a few churches and two funeral homes. Merton serves up fresh fish (mahi mahi, tuna or marlin), chicken or pork with local sides (breadfruit, rice and peas or macaroni pie). YUM!!

I highly recommend everyone try it!

Fun Photo Friday - Through a rum glass

TGIF!!!

This week has been a great busy (not sure if you can describe "busy" — too late). It has been my first full week back after my short break and I have hit the ground running — many projects on the go at work. We also have family visiting from Canada so it has been busy at home as well.

Last night we went to the small fishing village called Moon Town for a scrumptious dinner of fresh fish. While waiting on our food, I took out the camera to snap some photos (will definitely be showing you some in the next Last Week's Likes) and my brother (who is back home for March Break) suggested taking a shot through his rum glass before it was filled with a rum and ginger.

What a brilliant idea!

So he held it up to the little lantern that illuminated our table and I snapped this photo below. In Adobe Photoshop CS5, I upped the saturation a bit hence the aqua greeny, purple and the red bits of colour at the bottom of the rum glass.

Cheers to the weekend! May it be long, fun and relaxing!

And simply because I did it last week — not sure if this will be a trend... Here is a song to go with the Fun Friday Photo:

29 WAYS TO STAY CREATIVE

Here is a cute little video entitled, "29 WAYS TO STAY CREATIVE". One of my managers sent this to the marketing team a little while ago — and I really enjoyed it — so I share it with you.

29 WAYS TO STAY CREATIVE from TO-FU on Vimeo.

From this list I do the following the most:

27. Clean your workspace (I am always sorting through something in my bedroom which is basically my workspace)

I do the following the least:
21. Break the rules
23. Read a page of the dictionary

I wish I did more of the following:
17. Go somewhere new (break the everyday routine a little more than usual - that would be nice)

Here is the full list for you to go through and see what you do the most/least.

Last Week's Likes

So the last week hasn't been the best - my vacation ended, I had to go back to work, and on top of all that I came home with a cold. But one must always find a silver lining... and here is my week's silver lining:

Coming home to my animals
I have always grown up with dogs and cats - I love having pets. Since I have been home from vacation and I missed their company - I have spoilt them by letting them join me on my bed while I am on the computer or reading. They know this privilege is a rare occurrence but they are not questioning it, simply curling up and passing out.

From left to right: Lu Lu, Rosie, Winnie (cat)

Starting a book with the boyfriend
Now I am not a big reader. I take a while to read and sometimes tend to daydream in the midst of reading however I do enjoy reading a good book. This week I started "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and so far so good. I am more than half way now and the book is holding my attention - I even picked it up yesterday morning and read it with breakfast. It is an apocalyptic, suspense, totally-out-there-but-makes-you-wonder novel.

The description on the back of the book:
"In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love."

What is the nicest part about this book is I am not reading it alone. After a chapter or two - I can chat to David about what happened, what I think, what does he think — sort of like a mini book club.

Let me not forget to mention — it is a trilogy.
And... drum roll please... it is going to be a movie :)

And here is the trailer:

Dinner at my friend, Sanjana's house
This week, some girlfriends and I were invited to Sanjana's house for dinner. We gave each other updates, enjoyed a fantastic meal and finished the night off with a lovely surprise compliments Sanjana.  After dinner she gathered us all in the kitchen and gave us each a brownie covered in colourful sprinkles with a candle in it. She said that this little brownie was because in 2011 we were not the best at celebrating everyone's birthday - so she wanted to acknowledge everyone's special day on a random day.
It was so fun - to have some cake and champagne while sitting on kitchen counters with some of my favourite people.

Donating to a great cause
On Saturday, I went through all my jewelry and donated most of it to a lady trying to raise money for the Future Centre in Barbados. At the end of the day, most of the jewelry hasn't been touched in years. So why hold on to it? It wasn't easy to part with everything but at the end of the day it is going to a good cause.

Dog on the bed again - I am too weak!

Have a great Monday!!

Snazzy Saturday Snapshot aka Fun Photo Friday

So yesterday - I didn't have my act together. I went to work with out uploading a fun photo and to my surprise - when I came home there was no internet. It was a sign... it had to be a sign that there was not going to be any photo.

Barbados has been quite rainy and overcast for the passed 4 days and our internet provider was having some issues. Hopefully all issues are now resolved.

As a result you get a Snazzy Saturday Snapshot (I am quite clever... no??).

The photo for today was taken in Toronto and was a bit of an experiment. It was the last night of my vacation and I went to take some long exposure shots of the night lights in Toronto close to our hotel. I did not venture out alone my brother and great friend, Val accompanied me.

At the corner of Bloor and Yonge without any warning I opened the shutter and started to spin - the same way a little girl twirls when she puts on her princess dress.

My shutter was open for 10 seconds.

I have to admit that I looked extremely strange on the side of the road spinning - even my brother and
Val were unsure what to think and were questioning their association to me.

But then the shutter closed and I unveiled my master creation - an abstract - my company was impressed. It is amazing what you can create using light!

And for those in the mood - below is a song to go with the photo:

Peace xxx

March's Header

It is now the 3rd of March 2012... and I finally got myself a new header for Jar of Life for the month of March.

The photo was taken while strolling around the streets of Halifax. Even though there was no snow (boo hoo), there was definitely no leaves on the trees. So with the brilliant blue sky as my backdrop I took this photo. I find the naked branches on these trees looks lace in the header - but that could be just me.

Below are the three headers so far for the year - January through March. I am trying to keep the text "Jar of Life"in the same spot which is proving to be a constant challenge. But I feel that we can get our most creative when challenged - not sure this month's header is my most creative - I really like February's.

I will let you take a look and you can decide which is your favourite.

Imagine what it will be like come December - when there is a grand total of 12 headers to choose from.

Last Week's Likes - Week in Halifax and Toronto

So this Last Week's Likes is late - and for good reason.

I did so many things last week that I enjoyed immensely, summing it all up was not easy. I most definitely missed out a number of things on this list but here is the edited version.

Beautiful Halifax Weather
I was lucky. While on vacation in Halifax, there was more than one day of brilliant weather. There was little rain, no snow (sad face inserted here) and ample sunshine. There was barely any clouds in the sky and this sunshine weather made for some crisp photographs.

Good weather also encourages you to get out of the house and go for a walk - which we did on numerous occasions.

Photo walks around Halifax
Due to the amazing weather, I was able to trot around Halifax with my camera and get some fun shots. Luckily I didn't have to worry about weather (snow or rain) damaging my pride and joy camera and take some fun shots both during the day and night.

I secretly wanted there to be a foggy day for some eerie shots - but no such luck. Maybe next time.

A public skating park

Long exposure of factories across the waterfront

Lattes, Chai Tea Lattes and Mojitos
I was spoiled. All week I was treated to delicious lattes made with Canadian milk (so much better than Barbadian milk). Home-made lattes, speciality lattes, afternoon chai tea lattes - all enjoyed bundled up in bed/on the sofa/in cozy coffee shops.

If we were not feeling like lattes - we poured ourselves something a little harder. We made mojitos with Bajan rum. Barbados prides itself on its rum. So refreshing!

Chilling in with a chai latte in Just Us cafe
Amazing lattes brewed here

Breakfast in Bed
I woke up one morning to breakfast in bed and it made me feel quite special. I was served a soy latte, french toast with real maple syrup, ham, and fruit salad. I was on cloud 9 for the remainder of the day.

My 2010 Vancouver Olympics Winter Mittens
In 2010, I had two of my best uni friends come and visit me in Barbados. One friend passed on a gift from her lovely mum — a pair of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics signature red mittens. When I received them, I wasn't sure when next I was going to use them.

Who would have thought that a mere 2 years later I would be whipping out these eye-catching mittens once again - and this time for actual warmth.

Wearing the gloves in 2010 - I was picking up my friends from the beach after work (hence the attire.... and WOAH!!! - my hair is long)
The gloves in Canada - 2012

Remote Control for my Canon60D
I bought a remote control for my camera. This might be a bit of a conceited purchase (to take pictures of myself) but I am so excited about it. I can get some photos of me and also to do some "photo-booth"-esque shots, as well as some long exposure shots.

I am very excited as you can see in the photos below.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
I had one of my favourite meals in the quaint town of Lunenburg last week Wednesday. It was dinner at a little Italian place called Trattoria della Nonna and it was a double date (doubles dates are my new favourite thing).

Lunenburg is about an hour and a bit drive from Halifax.

The evening was perfect. We got to Lunenburg about an hour and a half before our reservation - which gave me lots of time to walk around the town and take photos of the quirky homes (very picturesque spot). Then we dined, fireside in the coziest little restaurant.

Both the ambiance and meal was superb.

I enjoyed:
Primi (appetizer) - Cappesante - seared scallops with pumpkin, celery root and parm risotto, cider and scallion butter sauce
Paste (pasta/main) - Ravioli - stuffed with squash, leeks and mascarpone, with lobster, roasted garlic and herb crema

I will forever day dream about this meal.

Passing through Toronto
On route back to Barbados I had a two night layover in Toronto which worked out brilliantly. I was able to see old friends (both from boarding school and university), family, and do a little shopping.

So glad I decided to do this mini trip.
